Black History Month is a time to reflect on the rich history, struggles, and limitless contributions of the Black community. Within this discourse, it’s equally important to shed light on a topic often overlooked—maternal wellness, including lactation, prenatal, and postpartum care. For Black mothers, these aspects of health are tightly woven into cultural identity, historical significance, and present-day challenges. This blog will explore the intersections of Black maternal wellness and Black History Month, highlight challenges and solutions, and share actionable tips and inspiring stories for Black mothers.
Maternal health and lactation have deep cultural roots within the Black community. Historically, breastfeeding and maternal care were essential practices for passing down traditions, promoting familial health, and fostering community bonds. Before the introduction of formula-fed methods, Black women, like many others, primarily relied on traditional breastfeeding techniques and ancestral knowledge.
